THE CORE TEAM OF A WOMAN'S PLACE ARE:
PRODUCTION CREDITS FOR THE PILOT EPISODE OF A WOMAN'S PLACE John T. Potthast, Executive in Charge As vice president of national productions for MPT, John Potthast's many production credits include Boatworks, HealthWeek, In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great, Wimzie's House and Into the Rising Sun. He has also served as executive producer of numerous cooking series, including Dessert Circus with Jacques Torres, Pierre Franey's Cooking in France and Pierre Franey's Cooking in Europe, among others. His many other credits for MPT include Baking With Julia, In Julia's Kitchen with Master Chefs, Julia Child's Cooking with Master Chefs, Lynn Fischer's Healthy Indulgences and Country Inn Cooking with Gail Greco. Potthast also produced The New Europeans, a 1992 documentary series, Passover: Traditions of Freedom, and the annual National Geography Bee. For four seasons, he served as producer of the award-winning series On Stage at Wolf Trap, and has also produced several programs for Great Performances. Potthast's many recognitions and awards include three national Emmys and three James Beard Foundation awards. In addition, he has been honored by the Ohio State University, Chicago, New York, Birmingham, Charleston, Columbus, Houston, Jackson Hole, Miami and US International Film Festivals. Phylis Geller, Consulting Executive Producer As senior vice president for cultural programming and new media at WETA in Washington, DC, Phyllis Geller is responsible for the development and production of the station's cultural television programs for local, national and international distribution. Recent projects in her purview include Ken Burns' Thomas Jefferson and Lewis & Clark; The Kennedy Center Presents; In Performance at the White House; Divided Highways and In the Prime. Formerly senior vice president for national/international productions at MPT, Ms. Geller was involved with such projects as Kratts' Creatures and To the Contrary. Prior to joining MPT, she was senior vice president of national productions at KCET in Los Angeles where she supervised production of dramas for American Playhouse; documentary series including Millennium, The Astronomers and Power in the Pacific; and individual programs for Nova and Wonderworks Family Dramas. She also managed the development of the preschool series The Puzzle Place. A past president of Women in Film, Los Angeles, and past chair of the Women in Film Foundation, Ms. Geller was a member of the Board of Directors of American Playhouse and the American Documentary (P.O.V.). She also served as chair of programming for the U.S. Public Television International Consortium. Jennifer Lawson, Executive Producer Jennifer Lawson is MPT's executive consultant to national and international productions. A former executive vice president of programming and promotion services for PBS, Ms. Lawson's many years of experience in television include programming, production funding and executive management. Prior to her executive programming position at PBS, Ms. Lawson was director of the Television Program Fund at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and executive director of The Film Fund, a granting foundation for independent filmmakers. A recipient of the Turner Broadcasting Trumpet Award, Ms. Lawson was recognized by Entertainment Weekly as one of the "101 Most Influential People in Entertainment," and by The Hollywood Reporter as one of the "Fifty Most Influential Women in Entertainment." Maria Nicolo, Senior Producer and Producer/Director for the United States SEE BIO ABOVE Paromita Vohra, Show Producer and Producer/Director for India SEE BIO ABOVE Patricia van HeerdenProducer/Director for South Africa Patricia van Heerden has worked on numerous film and video projects in the United States and South Africa. She is currently finishing a film about the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which is partially funded by the South African Department of Arts and Culture and the Soros Foundation. The idea for the film came out of her research for a Ph.D. in history at New York University. She is presently commissioned to do a short love story for the Weekly Mail and Guardian Television in South Africa, and is also working on a long-term project about colonialism in Southern Africa for the South African Broadcasting Commission. In addition to co-producing and co-directing the South African segment of A WOMAN'S PLACE, she also served as the project's academic coordinator. Catherine StewartProducer/Director for South Africa Catherine Stewart attended Columbia University's MFA Film Program in New York before returning to Johannesburg, South Africa, where she currently lectures at Wits University in screenwriting, directing and experimental filmmaking. She has written feature film scripts and directed short films. She has also worked on various documentary, experimental and feature films at Tri Star's feature film development office in New York and on the PBS documentary Children in Need. Ms. Stewart currently produces documentary programs for South African Broadcasting, including segments of a weekly television show, Mochochonono. T. Jayashree, Producer for India T. Jayashree has written, produced and edited documentary television and radio programs on issues including women's empowerment, rural development, ethnic violence and prostitution for broadcast both in India and the United States. She has produced stories for National Public Radio's documentary series SoundPrint, and has also worked on a number of documentaries in India, including Annapurna. Eli Yonova, Director of Photography Eli Yonova holds an MA from the High Institute of Cinematography in Moscow, the world's oldest film institute. Her 1994 feature film, Canary Season, was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Foreign Film and was part of the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival. Other features include: House for Gentle Souls, Death Could Wait and the international co-production, Touched by the Grace. Her documentaries, both film and video projects for European distribution, include Perpetum Mobile, The Competition, Show Your Cards and The Old House. Ms. Yonova also created and directed the television series Auto Mondial - Paris 92. Dena Mermelstein, Editor Dena Mermelstein has worked in the documentary film and video industry for almost nine years. She began her career creating videos for labor unions, such as director Barbara Koppel's New Opportunities, New Challenges for The Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers' Union. Some of Ms. Mermelstein's other editing projects included Choc-O-Rama, a 70-minute European documentary commissioned by ZDF-Arte, and The Veerni Project, a documentary about a women's health care initiative in Rajasthan, India. Ms. Mermelstein has also edited programs for WNET in New York and Lancit Media, where she worked on documentary shorts for Reading Rainbow and The Puzzle Place. Jude Ray, Consulting Producer Jude Ray is a New York-based producer and writer with an extensive background in cultural, public affairs and social issue documentaries, and in investigative television journalism. Ms. Ray has played a crucial role as consulting producer in a number of award-winning documentaries, including H-2 Worker (Grand Jury Prize winner at Sundance Film Festival), and has contributed to the development of series content and approach for A WOMAN'S PLACE. Aradhana Seth, Consulting Producer Aradhana Seth is a producer, director and production designer specializing in art and social issues. She has created, directed and produced numerous documentary and education programs including two programs for Invisible Hands, a five-part series on women in the unorganized labor sector of India. Ms. Seth has also worked on many news and public affairs specials, and has been a production designer for feature films, including Deepa Mehta's Fire and Earth.
